Fans have had their minds blown after seeing how a penalty kick is taken in blind football at the Paralympics

The 2024 Paralympic Games are currently ongoing in Paris, France.

Fans have been left stunned after seeing how a penalty is taken in the blind football event at the Paralympics.

The 2024 Paralympic Games are well underway in Paris, France after the Olympic Games came to an end early last month.

Currently, the People’s Republic of China lead the medal table with 74 gold medals won, Team GB are in second place having won 37 golds. Team USA round off the top three with 27.

Recently, fans were left stunned after seeing how a penalty was taken during the blind football event.

As shown on the official website, blind football ‘is an adaptation of football for athletes with vision impairment played with an audible ball’.

In a bid to add the sense of sound, the ball used is filled with bearings that rattle as it moves. All spectators are also asked to keep quiet during play so that the players can hear the ball.

After making its debut in Athens back in 2004, blind football has featured at every Paralympic Games since.

Brazil have won the gold medal at every edition of the Games since it began and during the preliminary rounds, they were up against home nation France.

They were awarded a penalty and Jardiel Vieira Soares stepped up to take it.

Before the kick was taken, Soares, who was blind folded, stood and waited as a guide tapped both posts of the goal so the player could work out where it was located.

Soares then smashed the ball past the France goalkeeper and Brazil ended up winning 3-0.

However, their long reign at the event was halted as they lost to Argentina via a penalty shootout at the semi-final stage.

As a result, Argentina will take on France for the gold medal and Brazil and Colombia will face off for the bronze.

Argentine Osvaldo Fernandez said: “It’s a dream for every kid from Argentina. It’s something beautiful, a unique feeling. When I started my career, my teammates tried and fought a lot against Brazil, and I got to join the team at the best moment.

“When I was walking to the ball, I was thinking about my dad, my nephew, my family and the cancer that I just overcame two years ago. The chemo – everything. I thought about everything. That’s why I started crying when we won.”
