Sports star launches lawsuit after horror injury leaves him unable to have sex with his wife

An ice hockey star has launched a lawsuit having claimed a horror injury has left him unable to be intimate with his wife.

In September 2025, Ivan Zenchenko played in a game at the Los Angeles Kings Valley Ice Centre and was struck in a head by a puck.

Footage of the incident was shared by the California Post, who reported that his helmet, a Bauer Re-Akt 55, was pierced and resulted in the puck “penetrating to his head,

Blood gushed across the ice rink and led to supporters in attendance being left horrified by the aftermath of the injury sustained.

Zenchenko was rushed to the nearby hospital and treated for lacerations and hematoma following the blow.

However, there were also other effects for the 32-year-old.

It's emerged through the lawsuit that he suffered memory loss and coordination of eyesight. In addition, his wife, Sofia, claims she has been impacted in a negative way.

Listed as a plaintiff in the lawsuit, it's stated that “loss of conjugal fellowship, sexual relations, and companionship” as her other half "cannot regularly function”.

Paul Sigelman, the couple's lawyer, gave further insight into Sofia's situation when he told the California Post: "There are some intimacy problems. They don’t have the same sex life, Ivan is completely disabled."

He continued: "That’s a recognized matter in California that if you lose a sexual partner, that’s her loss and she has a right to sue for that.”

Sigelman also said that Zenchenko "wants to play hockey again" as it was "his whole life". While he didn't give an exact figure, the attorney said it is "a multi-million dollar loss".

Bauer Hockey, as well as the Pure Hockey store in Anaheim where the helmet was bought in July 2025, are lifted as defendants in the lawsuit.

The suit explained: "It was selected and recommended by Pure Hockey for Zenchenko’s competition use on the ice. The manufacturing defect and/or the defective design was sold without warning.

“It is believed, and theron alleged the helmet differs from manufacturing specifications and design from other typical units of the Bauer Hockey helmet product line.”

As well as playing ice hockey, Zenchenko worked at an exotic car rebuild company but can no longer do the job to the same level.

According to Sigelman, memory loss impacts him regularly. He claimed: "He’ll be working on a car and he’ll take this piece off for whatever, and a moment later go to put it back and he has no memory of where it came from.”

Sofia is currently the only member of the couple employed as she is working as a housekeeper.
