Ireland's Daniel Wiffen gives hilariously honest interview immediately after 10k open water swim at Olympics

After becoming the first athlete from Northern Ireland to win Olympic gold in 36 years, Wiffen took part in the men's 10km marathon swim.

Ireland's Daniel Wiffen delivered a post-race interview for the ages after finishing 18th in the men's 10km marathon swim.

The 23-year-old, who was recently crowned the first Olympic champion from Northern Ireland in 36 years, described the open water race as "probably one of the worst things" he's ever done.

After winning 800-metre freestyle gold and 1500m bronze in the pool, Wiffen decided to take part in his first ever marathon swim in the open water on Friday, despite having no additional training.

But he soon regretted swapping La Defense Arena for the freezing cold waters of the River Seine. In fact, after falling away from the leading group early on, Wiffen admitted he considered dropping out.

He was 14th at the halfway point and following a gruelling swim, the Loughborough University student crossed the line in a very respectable time of 1:57:20.1.

Funnily enough, Wiffen said he was "feeling good" ahead of the 10km swim on Friday, despite concerns over water quality.

But speaking immediately after the race, the Leeds-born swimmer said it was "probably one of the worst things" he has ever done.

"When I got to halfway, all I was thinking was 'I'm already Olympic champion and I’m swimming this and I’m coming 18th, we’ll just finish it now and then I’m never doing it again," he told RTE Sport.

"My goal coming into this was to finish, I’m very pleased with myself and happy I didn’t come last so that’s the main thing.

"All the coaches were laughing because I was swimming out by myself because I wasn’t arsed going behind somebody, I can’t be arsed getting kicked in the face."

"I got a couple of elbows in the eye and punched in the face at one point, this sport isn’t for me. I definitely want my own lane next time."

He added: "I’m so happy I’ve completed it and I’m retiring from open water."

You can watch the interview in full below. And yes, he will be having a pint of Guinness or two this evening.

Here's how fans on social media reacted to Wiffen's post-race interview.

One wrote: "What a character, he's brilliant. 'I wanted to do it because my friends were doing it.' What a way to describe the reasoning behind doing a 10km swim at the Olympics of all places."

A second said: "Love the honesty and humour in this. He still came 18th in the Olympics! What a gruelling sport, there's a long list of things I'd rather do than swim in a dirty river for two hours."

A third commented: "Love this guy's vibes here, whilst he slugs a bottle of Coke," and a fourth said: "Well done Daniel. I love the brutal honesty."

A fifth added: "No sugar coating with @WiffenDaniel. It is what it is. Enjoy his interviews. Enjoy the Guinness tonight."
