An update on the condition of Team England gymnast Gabriel Langton has been issued after he landed headfirst following a three-metre fall on Friday (July 24).

The 19-year-old, who competes out of Birmingham, was treated by medics at Glasgow International Arena, after the horrific incident.

While spinning on the horizontal bar, Langton missed his catch before landing directly on his head.

A lengthy delay followed before a number of medical staff rushed to his aid as he lay motionless on the ground.

He was later stretchered away from the arena floor and taken to hospital.

“We are grateful to the medical teams who responded immediately to provide assistance,” Team England said in a statement on Friday.

“He has been taken to hospital and we will share more information when it is available.”

Langton only received a late call-up to the Games, replacing gymnastics legend and six-time Olympic medallist Max Whitlock at short notice.

The teenager’s teammates went on to secure a silver medal, with Canada pipping them to gold and, in doing so, claiming their first gold medal in the event in two decades.

Speaking after the event, his fellow competitors wished him well, with Canada’s Felix Dolci saying: “It's terrible, but it goes to show that gymnastics is a very, very difficult and complicated sport. It's dangerous, you know, sometimes.

“All our thoughts go to Gabriel and the team,” while England’s Luke Whitehouse added: “When something like that happens, you've just got to forget about it and reset. I just had to focus on my routine, one skill at a time.”

On Saturday evening (July 25), a positive update on Langton’s health emerged in a statement from British Gymnastics, which read: “Gabriel was transferred to hospital as a precautionary measure overnight and underwent multiple scans today, with very positive results. Thankfully, he has been cleared of any serious injury complications and will be discharged to return to the team hotel this evening.

“He is in good spirits and hugely grateful for the many messages of support and the excellent care provided by the medical teams. He is looking forward to being reunited with the team to celebrate his silver medal.

“He will be discharged to the team hotel under the care of the Team England medical team this evening.”

The Commonwealth Games run until August 2.
