As a pro wrestler, Phil Brooks was a cult hero who transcended the industry with his own unique, captivating blend of scintillating in-ring work and 'pipe bomb' promos. The 'Best In The World' tag line wasn't merely a self anointed moniker aimed at furthering a gimmick, but an accurate description of Brooks' supreme talent, which rightfully earned him the adulation of millions during a storied career that spanned almost 20 years.
You may know Brooks better as CM Punk, a five time World Champion in the WWE who, in a month's time, will finally make his long awaited UFC debut at UFC 203 against Mickey Gall. For Punk, the fight is both a beginning and an end. The Gall bout will mark the culmination of almost two years of training, injury set backs and acclimatising to the world of MMA while also presenting an opportunity for Punk to become a bona fide contender in the octagon, should he overcome the New Jersey native on 10th September, in Cleveland. Ohio.
Given Punk's reputation upon arriving in the UFC, there has been almost incessant hype of his first competitive appearance, which has fallen victim to injury related setbacks on several occasions. Now, with the Gall fight only a month away, UFC have amped up the excitement around Punk's octagon bow with a trailer for their four part 'Evolution Of Punk' documentary and, if these two minutes and six seconds are anything to go by, we're in for an absolute treat.
With age and experience not being on Punk's side, a lengthy run in UFC is unlikely but, should the Straight Edge Superstar be able to string a couple of victories together, Dana White may have just found himself one of the most marketable stars in MMA history. And let's face it, who doesn't want to see CM FUCKING PUNK tear a hole right through the UFC?
'The Evolution of Punk' is set to air in four parts starting Monday, August 15 at 9:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1. There's currently no word as to whether it'll air in the UK, although we imagine Youtube and several other online outlets will be airing it.
