Police issue update in case of ice hockey player who died after being slashed in throat during game

South Yorkshire Police have released a statement updating the case of Adam Johnson, who tragically died in an ice hockey match.

Nottingham Panthers star Johnson sadly passed away, aged 29, following a fatal injury on the ice.

His throat was slashed in a collision during a fixture that took place in Sheffield, England, at the end of October.

The Minnesota-born player was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Following the incident, a man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

Local police have now confirmed the man arrested has been re-bailed until May 14.

"A man who is under investigation following the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson in Sheffield has been re-bailed," said a spokeswoman.

"Adam, aged 29, was fatally injured during a game between the Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers on 28 October last year.

"He was sadly later pronounced dead in hospital, and a post mortem confirmed he died as a result of a neck injury.

"A man was arrested on 14 November last year on suspicion of manslaughter and later bailed. He has been further re-bailed until Tuesday 14 May 2024.

Johnson's death stunned the ice hockey community as thousands of fans witnessed the horrific sequence unfold at the arena.

The Elite Ice Hockey League, the highest level of ice hockey in the UK, released a statement in wake of the American's death as they said neck guards are 'strongly recommended' but are not mandatory.

Petr Cech's ice hockey team subsequently made neck guards mandatory for all players and coaches.
