The NBA has already established a precedent for the punishment LeBron James could face after clashing with a referee during Sunday's 116-114 win over the Phoenix Suns.
James played a key role in the victory, finishing with 26 points, three rebounds and four assists.
The result keeps the Lakers in contention for second place in the Western Conference, with 18 wins and seven defeats this season.
The Denver Nuggets have won 19 matches, while the Oklahoma City Thunder lead the way with 24 wins.

However, Sunday's game was overshadowed by an incident involving James.
The 40-year-old squared up to Suns forward Dillon Brooks before grabbing the arm of an NBA referee and shouting at the official.
The flashpoint came in the third quarter when Brooks was fouled by James' teammate Luke Doncic.

Brooks lost control of the ball before hitting it towards James, leaving the Lakers star furious.
A referee attempted to diffuse the situation by stepping between the two players, but James continued to shout at the official and even grabbed their arm.
The Lakers star then had to be restrained by teammate Rui Hachimura and head coach JJ Redick.
It is expected that he will now face further punishment from the NBA.
A potential indication of the sanction that James could face can be drawn from previous examples.
Indiana Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin was suspended for one game without pay for inappropriate contact with, and verbal abuse of a match official in January 2025.

Reflecting on the incident, he said: "It was the moment.
"The game is so intense, especially myself, being this competitive, I just want to win. It was an unfortunate situation, but I was able to learn from it."
James's altercation is not the first time a Lakers star has found themselves in trouble with the NBA over conduct towards officials.
In April, Doncic was ejected during the Lakers' defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder after officials believed he had abused a referee.
The Slovenian insisted he was merely engaging in trash talk with a fan.
After the game, he said: “If [the fan is] going to talk, I’m going to talk back, like always.
“That had nothing to do with the ref, so I didn’t really understand.”
Last year, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid was also ejected during his team's win over the San Antonio Spurs after confronting a referee.
He disputed a call made by Jenna Schroeder and had to be restrained as he shouted at the official.
According to the crew chief's pool report, contact between the player and the referee was deemed only incidental and therefore did not warrant further punishment.
