Revealed: The four teams still in the running to sign LeBron James

LeBron James entered the free agency market after leaving the LA Lakers in June, and the veteran is yet to decide on his next team.

James ended an incredible eight years at the Lakers due to his desire to win a fifth championship ring, seeing the best chance of achieving that by leaving.

The 41-year-old is aware that the Lakers are building for the future and haven't won an NBA championship since 2020.

The NBA's leading point scorer has since had proposals from several teams, with a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers potentially on the cards after American broadcaster Bill Simmons suggested a deal was "done".

Almost two weeks on from that statement, though, and James is no closer to agreeing terms over his next move, insisting that he won't hold up the league much longer as he plans to make a decision very soon.

"What's most important is I want to compete, I want to compete at a high level," James said at Fanatics Fest in New York City last week.

"I want to join a franchise that kind of shares the same motto as myself, and that's, like, practicing championship happens every day. But trusting the process more than anything."

James is waiting for the right opportunity to arise, and at one point, as many as eight teams were interested in landing him.

But according to the Daily Knicks, that shortlist has now been narrowed down to four, with the Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors all emerging as the strongest contenders to sign the most coveted free agent on the market.

Golden State are widely regarded as the only team in the Western Conference contending for his services, and a transfer to the seven-time champions could see him link up with the legendary Steph Curry.

A return to the Cavaliers - where he started his NBA career - would be a fairytale switch. Meanwhile, previous reports indicate that James is taking a pitch from the 76ers "very seriously" after their capture of Jaylen Brown.

Miami Heat also present James with the shot of a reunion after previously spending four years there between 2010 and 2014.

LeBron James' agent shares update on future

When asked about his client's future earlier in July, agent Rich Paul said James was "taking his time".

"He's taking his time, man, evaluating things. I've left him alone," he said. "Play golf, do the things you need to do. He understands where things are. When he’s ready, he’ll let me know.”

Paul has since confirmed that several teams have called to see if they can be doing anything more to convince James to join their team.

"There have been several people to call and say, 'Hey, Rich, is there anything more we should be doing? We could be doing?'" he revealed on his podcast, "Game Over".

"And my answer is, 'No. We don't need you to go above and beyond about anything. We understand it. It's clear. All the messages have been sent.'"

Clearly, James has plenty of attractive proposals on the table, and he's taking his time to decide what move would give him the best chance of winning a fifth NBA championship before he retires.
