LeBron James has reportedly decided to leave the LA Lakers as a free agent and intends to continue his NBA career with a new team.
The basketball icon will turn 42 during the 2026-27 season, but retirement is not yet on the horizon as he prepares for the next chapter of his illustrious career.
James has been selected to the NBA All-Star team 22 times, earning a place every season since his first appearance in 2005. He has also won four NBA MVP awards, a total bettered only by Michael Jordan, Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history, James holds the league records for most career points, most minutes played and most All-Star appearances. Across his career, he has averaged an outstanding 26.8 points per game.

During his time with the Lakers, James guided the franchise to the 2020 NBA Championship and made history last season when he became teammates with his eldest son, Bronny James. Overall, he has won four NBA titles and claimed three Olympic gold medals with Team USA.
According to ESPN, James' agent, Rich Paul, has officially informed the Lakers that the franchise can move forward without him, with the four-time NBA champion planning to continue his career elsewhere for the 2026-27 season.
Who will LeBron James sign for after leaving the Lakers?
James is expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents of the offseason, with several franchises already linked with a move for the NBA superstar.
Early reports suggest the Golden State Warriors are leading the race, although the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat have also been credited with interest.
ESPN reports that Golden State are preparing an aggressive pursuit of the 41-year-old while also exploring a move for Anthony Davis, who is currently with the Washington Wizards. Draymond Green has reportedly declined his $27.6 million player option and is said to be willing to negotiate a reduced salary to help create the financial flexibility needed to land either James or Davis.
A move to Golden State would reunite James with close friend Green and could also see him team up with Stephen Curry for the first time. The two NBA legends famously faced each other in four consecutive NBA Finals between 2015 and 2018, with Curry and the Warriors winning three of those championship series. James also has a strong relationship with Davis after the pair helped lead the Lakers to the 2020 NBA title.
