LeBron James’ next franchise options have been revealed by an NBA insider, including a shock dark horse pair that are vying for the 41-year-old’s services.

James exited the NBA play-offs in his 23rd season to reigning champions the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday evening, after being swept 4-0 in the Western Conference semi-final series.

The 41-year-old, without the support of injured MVP-candidate Luka Doncic and an initially absent Austin Reaves, carried the Los Angeles Lakers through their first round series against the Houston Rockets.

James averaged 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game in the 2026 NBA play-offs, dropping 24-12-3 in a tightly-fought 110-115 loss on Tuesday evening.

The GOAT contender has won just one chip in his eight-season tenure with the LA Lakers, occurring in ‘the bubble’ during the COVID-struck 2021 NBA play-offs.

James, who also won the esteemed FMVP in his fourth NBA Championship victory, remains two rings behind fellow GOAT contender Michael Jordan, and play-off contention could play a vital role in his end-of-career destination next season.

LeBron James’ likely next franchise revealed

NBA insider Marc Stein revealed that four franchises are willing to make offers for the NBA superstar, the two most notable being the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers, with a separate pair of dark horses also entering the fray.

The insider revealed that those initial two teams have contract limitations that may prevent a James move from happening, writing on The Stein Line: “The Golden State Warriors, who league sources say have maintained a longstanding interest in [James], will be severely limited in what they can offer.

“James’ hometown, [the] Cleveland Cavaliers, have even less financial flexibility than the Warriors… but no one wants to totally rule that one out because of the storybook ending factor,” continued Stein.

The 41-year-old began his career with his hometown franchise the Cavaliers, before departing to win two NBA Championships with the Miami Heat.

James later returned to deliver the 2016 NBA title, the Cavs’ first Championship victory, by coming back from 3-1 down in the Finals against the greatest regular season team in basketball history, the Warriors, who went 73-9 that year.

The two shock moves James could make

Elsewhere, the 41-year-old’s services are also wanted by the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Clippers, which would make for far more shocking moves than the aforementioned two, who James has been linked with for seasons.

Stein wrote: “James’ deep fondness for Madison Square Garden has been known for years, but the Knicks — suddenly favorites to win the East and go to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 — could certainly opt to stay on their current path.

The only other team you could credibly add to the shortlist is the Clippers, who employ James’ former Cavaliers coach (Tyronn Lue) and do play in Los Angeles,” he continued

The Knicks, who are favourites to advance to the NBA Finals in the Eastern Conference, are certainly underdogs in match-ups with either of the Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs.

In the event of a loss — if the New York franchise are to even make it there — James would be joining a Championship-contending core at the end of his career, and could perhaps be swayed by the opportunity to win one final ring.

In 2020, NBA commentator Bill Simmons revealed that the Knicks were once James’ first choice when deciding to leave the Cavs, before a “disaster” meeting saw the NBA icon instead choose the Miami Heat, where he achieved Championship glory.

James could come full-circle with a move to New York if those rumours have any truth, finally ending up at his once preferred destination in the backend of his storied career.

Stein also believes that, despite significant interest from the four listed teams, it remains a strong possibility that James will stay put in LA, with retirement off the table.

For now, fans will wait “a good six weeks” for more concrete confirmations of the offers that Stein expects the 41-year-old to receive, as the NBA legend looks to write his final chapter.
