Fans have leapt to the defence of golfer Rory McIlroy and wife Erica Stoll after the pair were blamed for being abused at the Ryder Cup on Saturday.
A supporter in the crowd in New York reportedly threw a drink at both McIlroy and Stoll after Saturday’s action as Team Europe eased into a commanding 11.5-4.5 lead following a rampant second day golf.
Stoll was reportedly left in tears after a US reporter detailed the worst insults from the crowd at the Ryder Cup.
And US legend Chipper Jones has looked to blame the Team Europe star and his wife for the abuse they have received.
'It's unfair, but it's reality in NY!'
“Hi….my name is Chipper Jones. I played in NY 12-15 times every yr for 20 yrs and multiple times in the postseason,” the former baseball star posted on his official X account on Sunday.

“AT NO TIME in 2 decades was my family EVER allowed to go to a game in NY. What do u expect to happen? Is it right? No! But when u are public enemy #1….expect to be treated harshly.
“No way that I expose my wife or kids to that. It’s unfair, but it’s reality in NY!”
Chipper did round off his post in praise of Team Europe, stating: “PS…..in response to the NY crowd…..epic performance by Euro team!”

The post from 53-year-old went viral and at the time of writing, has been viewed 2.7 million times on X, with many criticising Chipper’s decision to lay the blame on McIlroy and his wife rather than the hostile New York crowd.
'This is an outrageous take'
“Chipper. I am a Braves fan from the UK but you have just embarrassed yourself with that tweet. The behaviour of those fans needs to be called out and condemned. Nobody should accept bad behaviour just because it's New York. Call it out for what it is, unacceptable,” one user replied.
“This is an outrageous take lmao. I've gone to countless Cowboys games in the Meadowlands over the years and never once have I had a drink thrown on me. This is not a common occurrence in NY,” another added.

“It’s golf man. You were one of my favorites growing up. This is an absolute bum take,” a third responded.
A fourth user also stated this wouldn’t have happened in Europe, posting: “The American mentality. Compare Apples with Apples. Did this happen to any USA player in Rome? No. Would it ever? No.”
McIlroy has been the subject of intense abuse throughout the Ryder Cup, but having received similar in 2016, he is adamant that he is fuelled by the hostilities from the Team USA crowd.
