Erica Stoll, the wife of Rory McIlroy, was left in tears after the golf star was subject to abuse from spectators at the Ryder Cup.
On Friday, the biennial Ryder Cup teed off at the Bethpage Black Golf Course in Long Island, New York.
Despite heading into the fiercely competitive event as the underdogs, Team Europe, led by team captain Luke Donald, boast a likely insurmountable lead heading into the final matches on Sunday.
As it stands, the Europeans are currently winning 11.5-4.5, an impressive feat given the fact that several members of the team have been subject to waves of abuse and jeering from American fans.

And it has now been revealed that some of the abuse aimed at world no.2 McIlroy was so severe that it brought his wife, Stoll, to tears.

Across the second day of play, McIlroy and teammate Shane Lowry had to deal with fans shouting just moments before they hit the ball to try and put them off during their fourball match against Justin Thomas and Cam Young
Shortly after the match ended, sports journalist Joel Beall revealed exactly what had been said to the pair throughout the match, and it's no surprise that it eventually led to the pair hitting back at fans.

According to Beall's Golf Digest report, "Leprechaun!" "Overrated!" and "Take out the Irish trash!" were all shouted at McIlroy as he stepped out onto the first hole.
Meanwhile some fans shouted homophobic chants referencing McIlroy and Lowry's close friendship, with the only one Beall felt comfortable writing being, "Rory, don't let your boyfriend down!"
In total, Beall suggested that the two Irishmen had received at least 30 f-bombs from the crowd while playing the first four holes of the course.
But things took an even worse turn later in their outing as one fan asked McIlroy if he had 'patched things up' with Stoll, referencing the marital issues that the golf star has recently had with his wife.

In May last year, the pair announced that they were filing for divorce, but later revealed that they were reversing that decision less than a month later.
As McIlroy approached the 17th green, one fan decided to throw beer at him, with some of it hitting Stoll who was also in attendance supporting her husband.
This led to McIlroy pausing play to usher her away from the scene, with Irish publication The 42 writing that the golf star was later seen walking away from the final hole with his arm around his wife as tears were streaming down her face.
