Americans Demand Drastic Ryder Cup Rule Change After Europe Dominate

Team USA went into the final day of the Ryder Cup down 11.5-4.5 after a dominant performance from Team Europe

American golf fans are demanding a drastic rule change to the Ryder Cup after being dominated by Team Europe in the opening two days of the 2025 edition.

Team Europe eased into a commanding 11.5-4.5 lead after the opening two days of action as the likes of Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose excelled in New York.

Back in the US, Team USA had been expected to make a stab at reclaiming the Ryder Cup crown they lost to Team Europe in Rome back in 2023.

The raucous USA crowd had been expected to make for a hostile atmosphere for Luke Donald and his men, but this has played into Team Europe’s hands.

Team Europe have amassed a huge score and it would take a significant downturn in fortunes for Team USA to make a comeback in Sunday’s singles pairings.

And now, USA fans believe that a drastic rule change is what is needed in order to make Ryder Cup more competitive.

US golf fans propose Ryder Cup rule change

“Maybe its time to play country vs country not continent vs country #RyderCup2025,” one user posted on X.

“At some point we may need to rethink this one country vs an entire continent concept,” a second wrote.

A third, meanwhile, suggested to combine USA with Mexico and Canada, suggesting the population of Europe makes for a wider talent pool, and to even the playing ground as Team USA continues to struggle.

“I mean, there's something to that: The population of Europe is 750 million, the population of the U.S. is 350 million. Gonna take some fresh thinking to breathe life back into the Ryder Cup - Team North America is a good start!” golf journalist Alan Shipnuck added.

However, some found the suggestion that the rule change to be ridiculous and has only been brought up as Team USA underperform on Long Island.

'Typical American menality'

“Someone’s not enjoying losing! Typical American mentality - we’re not winning - let’s change the format,” one user replied to the concept of altering the Ryder Cup.

“Are you stupid. Look at the population size of your s*** country. Embarrassing seeing as kids go to college to play golf and your still s***,” a second added.

Another user posted to the concept of Team North America: “Hahahahahaha…you’re a journalist bruh. Quick google search will tell you there are more active participants in golf in America than in Europe. Throw into the mix the fact that there are roughly 10,000 more golf courses in the US then in Europe AND…”

A similar change occurred back in 1979 where Team Great Britain was expanded to become Team Europe, and between 1995 and 2014, Team Europe won eight of 10 editions of the Ryder Cup.
