Jon Rahm makes final decision on LIV Golf future as crucial deadline approaches

Jon Rahm will reportedly make an announcement about his LIV Golf future as the breakaway circuit fears it could lose its biggest star.

Back in April, it was confirmed that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) would stop financing LIV Golf at the end of the 2026 season.

The announcement immediately raised doubts over the future of the breakaway golf league, with questions being raised about the futures of some of LIV's biggest and best players.

Chief among LIV's top stars is two-time major winner Rahm, who joined officially joined the circuit in the 2024 season, reportedly signing a massive contract reportedly worth upwards of £450million.

Despite efforts from LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil to find new investors, the future of LIV Golf remains entirely uncertain, with the final event of the 2026 season at the end of August rapidly approaching.

In light of this, it is now believed that concerns are growing inside LIV Golf that Rahm is preparing to announced that he will abandon the breakaway league.

According to The Telegraph, insiders are now "almost resigned" to losing the Spaniard, with Rahm set to announce his future plans within the next few weeks when the 2026 season ends.

Even if O'Neil secures the finances needed to continue LIV Golf next year, it's reported that Rahm isn't a fan of the proposed new direction that would involve only 10 events per season and significantly smaller prize funds.

Although it is not absolutely certain that Rahm will leave LIV Golf, all signs appear to be pointing to an exit, with the the DP World Tour growing increasingly confident that he will feature prominently on the European tour from 2027 onwards.

The report adds that the DP World Tour has already been made aware of Rahm's likely decision, further suggestion that he will be leaving LIV at the end of the season.

Earlier this year, Rahm reached an agreement that saw him settle all outstanding fines with the DP World Tour, allowing to return to play on the circuit this season and in 2027.

What will happen if Rahm leaves LIV Golf

Rahm's departure from LIV Golf would be nothing short of disastrous for the breakaway league, as he would become just the latest big name to leave, following Brooks Koepka, who left in December, and Patrick Reed, who left in January.

As it stands, Rahm's current LIV contract still has multiple years, with the league believed to owe him as much as $200m.

Should he decide to leave, it is likely that this would be reduced as part of a negotiated settlement, or it could be converted into equity in the new league, should it continue to exist.

When asked about losing major players at the end of the season, O'Neil decided to keep his cards close to his chest, saying: ""[We] would certainly love them to come along for the ride and journey because they carry maybe more weight than anybody in the game and I have a lot of time for that."

Ultimately, the future of LIV Golf, and Rahm's place in it, is likely to be discovered in the coming weeks, with the final event scheduled for August 27-30 in Michigan.

However, even this season finale event is uncertain with tickets for season-ending event no longer available.
