The extraordinary numbers behind Lando Norris' reported new McLaren contract

As he launches a chase against Kimi Antonelli for a second consecutive Drivers' World Championship title, Lando Norris is expected to be rewarded with a brand-new deal at McLaren.

The papaya duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri faced an uncertain future earlier this season, as talks opened between McLaren and Max Verstappen, with the Red Bull driver reportedly wanting out of his contract to be a part of a more competitive team.

Whether that would have paired him with Norris or Piastri would have been a tough conversation, although the idea of a swap deal was floated in regard to the latter. However, Piastri confirmed that he will be racing in papaya in 2027, and Verstappen has since penned a long-term deal with Red Bull.

Norris has emerged as the number one driver at McLaren after overtaking his Australian teammate with a few races left to secure the title.

This year, Norris has found form again, winning both races either side of the summer break to begin McLaren's chase for supremacy again.

Now, reports claim that Norris is set to be offered a new multi-year deal that would make him the third highest-paid driver on the grid.

Lando Norris reportedly set to earn $60m in new McLaren deal

According to reports from journalist Marc Limacher, who released a book detailing the financial details of the F1 contracts, Norris has been discussing a new contract since June and is set for a 50 per cent salary increase.

The report claims that the reigning world champion earns €40 million a year, but this would rise to €60 million as of next season.

If the numbers are to be believed, this would make Norris the third-highest-paid Formula 1 driver, just behind Lewis Hamilton, although that still sits around half of what Max Verstappen is set to be earning.

The Red Bull driver's new contract is reportedly worth €92 million a year, rising to €115 million if bonuses are achieved.

Norris has yet to sign the deal, which would come into effect from next season. There has been no public comment surrounding his contractual status.

Lewis Hamilton gears up for a new contract until 2028

Norris and Verstappen aren't the only drivers who are focused on penning new deals, as the 2027 resurgence of Lewis Hamilton has reportedly earned him a renewed contract at Ferrari.

Hamilton has been rumoured to be renewing with Ferrari for a few months now, after getting back to winning ways in red back at the Spanish Grand Prix in June.

The extension is set to keep the seven-time world champion at Ferrari until the 2028 season, and is expected to be announced next week at their home race at Monza.

After a wild window of 'silly season' rumours, it looks like McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes will all be keeping their driver duos for another year.
