After a tough outing for the Matildas in their Olympics opener, head coach Tony Gustavsson has made a promise to the Australian people.

The Matildas found themselves going down to Germany 3-0 in what was a brutal first contest for the Australian side.

Down by just 1-0 in the first half, the Matildas conceded two goals in the space of just a few minutes late in the second half to end a tough night out.

Captain Steph Catley spoke after the match, saying that they didn’t perform to the team’s standards.

“That’s tournament football,” Catley said to Channel Nine post-match.

“We’ve got two more games and we’ve got to turn it around quickly. We’ve got a lot to learn from here. I think at times we were on top and we let two set pieces affect the game in a very negative way.”

Head coach Tony Gustavsson apologised to the Australian people watching at 3am at home and urged them that their time is far from over.

“I promise you it’s worth it,” Gustavsson said about the early wake ups for Australians at home.

“These players feel it and need it. What we need to do now is learn from this game, delete it as soon as possible. We have two days to prepare for Zambia and hopefully we can make more people back home proud after that game.

The Matildas get their shot at redemption when they take on Zambia in game two on July 29 at 3am AEST.
