Scott McTominay tipped to complete shock return to the Premier League this summer and it'll concern Man Utd massively

Former Manchester United star is 'among the strongest midfielders in Europe'

Scott McTominay has been tipped for a move back to the Premier League and a destination that wouldn't go down at all well with former club Manchester United.

McTominay is in tremendous form for Serie A leaders Napoli in the first season after a £25.7 million move from Man Utd.

The Scotland international has scored 11 league goals for his new club and members of the notoriously picky Italian media have been falling over themselves to praise him.

Antonio Giordano of the iconic Gazzetta dello Sport called him a 'genius' after his brace against Torino on Sunday, goals that helped the Partenopei to capitalise on Inter Milan's surprise defeat to Roma and go three points clear at the top of the Serie A table.

They have the Scudetto firmly in their sights.

McTominay's performances have inevitably attracted speculation about his future and 54-year-old Neapolitan coach Carmine Gautieri, currently without a club, has tipped the Lancastrian for another shock move between major teams.

Speaking on Radio Capri, Gautieri was full of compliments for McTominay.

"He was an excellent purchase," he said.

"We're talking about a complete player. He has pace, he fits in well, he knows how to shoot and he also scores with his head.

"I must admit that I didn't expect it, so congratulations to whoever brought him to [Napoli].

"A profile like that could easily play in teams of the calibre of Real Madrid or Manchester City.

"At the moment he is among the strongest midfielders in Europe."

Gautieri has also appeared in Napoli's midfield.

A journeyman player, he represented his broken home-town club as they started their journey back from the lower leagues after bankruptcy.

The chances of McTominay playing for Man City after spending 22 years on the books of their hated local rivals are vanishingly small, of course, but his positive reviews will certainly have even the biggest European clubs taking notice.

Antonio Conte and Napoli are in pole position in Serie A, three points clear of Inter Milan with four matches left to play against Lecce, Genoa, Parma and Cagliari.

If the top two finish the season level on points, a play-off would determine the championship.
