Man Utd given Gyokeres, Hojlund and Mateta updates as Amorim's striker role looks more fragile than ever

Manchester United are looking to add a number nine after Matheus Cunha signing and Bryan Mbeumo pursuit

Manchester United's pursuit for a new striker has never looked more fragile as updates are given on Viktor Gyokeres, Rasmus Hojlund and Jean-Philippe Mateta.

After a disastrous season, in which United finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the UEFA Europa League final, head coach Ruben Amorim is focusing on adding attacking players to his squad.

They have already signed Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhamption Wanderers, paying £62.5 million.

And they have now submitted a second bid for Brentford talisman Bryan Mbuemo,

It was also confirmed this week that United's captain Bruno Fernandes will be staying at Old Trafford.

Al-Hilal reportedly offered between £80 million and £100 million for the 30-year-old, but Fernandes has opted to stay at United.

Will United be able to lure Gyokeres to Old Trafford?

Gyokeres would reportedly still be open to joining his former boss at Old Trafford, despite United failing to qualify for European football, according to talkSPORT.

But they will likely face competition for the 26-year-old's signature.

One club which has been linked are Premier League rivals Arsenal, who are also interested in a striker this summer.

But it appears they have decided to prioritise RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano wrote: "Understand Arsenal are now advancing in negotiations for Benjamin Šeško after initial concrete talks reported last week.

"Discussions underway and proceeding well between all parties involved, player & clubs.

"No agreement yet now or expected this weekend; but advancing."

What is going to happen to Hojlund?

After making a £72 million move to join United in 2023, Hojlund scored 16 goals across all competitions in his debut campaign.

But the 22-year-old struggled last year, bagging just 10 times.

Now, he appears to be the subject of interest from Champions League finalists, Inter Milan, according to The Telegraph.

James Ducker reported that although Inter would prefer to sign the attacker on a loan basis, United would prefer a permanent sale.

Hojlund has experience in the Italian league, scoring nine goals in 32 games for Atalanta before his move to England.

United suffer Mateta blow

One name which has been linked to Manchester United is Crystal Palace's Mateta.

The 27-year-old French attacker has just two years left on his contract and is proven in the Premier League - a trait United have pursued this summer with Cunha and Mbeumo.

But it appears that Mateta may sign a contract extension with the Eagles, as reported by BBC Sport.

Sami Mokbel said: "A full agreement is still to be reached but it is understood a deal is now close."

It leaves United with one fewer option as they continue their search for a new striker, the pressure to secure Gyokeres increased if Hojlund does indeed depart.
