Liverpool 'planning' sensational swap deal with Crystal Palace to sign Marc Guehi and it's pure genius

Arne Slot's side are targeting defensive reinforcements and could use a player as a makeweight.

Liverpool are planning to offer one of their exciting young prospects as a makeweight in any potential transfer deal for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Anfield club won the Premier League title last season in Arne Slot's maiden campaign in charge after replacing Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside.

Last year, Liverpool made just one signing in the form of winger Federico Chiesa from Juventus for £10m, but it did not harm their domestic season after winning the league by 10 points.

This summer transfer window, Slot's side have pressed on with strengthening the squad with three major acquisitions made so far ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Jeremie Frimpong was signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5m to fill the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid.

Liverpool broke their transfer record by paying an initial £100m to Leverkusen for midfielder Florian Wirtz, while Milos Kerkez has arrived from Bournemouth for £40m.

The heart of defence is an area where the Anfield club could yet bring in reinforcements to add further options to a first choice partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool also have Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez in that department, but the former has been mentioned to be potential signing for Leverkusen and the latter has struggled with injury problems.

One of the players who could be on the move this summer is Palace defender Guehi, who is entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park after winning the FA Cup with the Eagles last season.

This summer therefore represents the last chance the Eagles have of obtaining a substantial fee for the England international, or risk him leaving for free in 12 months from now.

Now, The Sun reports that Liverpool are preparing to offer attacker Ben Doak into the deal as a possible makeweight in any transfer for Guehi.

Doak, 19, spent last season out on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough and scored three goals in 24 appearances for the Riverside Stadium club.

The newspaper reports that Palace are seeking around £50m for Guehi this summer, and that Liverpool rate Doak at around the £25m mark, but negotiations would need to happen.

Liverpool signed Doak from Celtic in 2022 and, owing to the attacker's age at the time, paid compensation of around £600,000 to the Scottish side.

Newcastle United made a series of bids for Guehi last summer, the highest of these reported to be in the region of £70m, but Palace stood firm and declined the offers.

Both the Magpies and Manchester United are reported to be among the other sides interested in Guehi's services.
