Tubes hits back at Soccer AM fans who say 'it's not what it used to be'

Tubes hits back at Soccer AM fans who say 'it's not what it used to be'

Soccer AM stalwart Tubes has opened up on the show coming to an end.

Almost 30 years after it first appeared on our television screens, cult football show Soccer AM will today broadcast for the final time.

The magazine show has been a weekend staple for millions of football fans in the UK in that time, its popularity enduring the decades thanks to humour, personality and light-hearted nature.

Soccer AM's laddish humour didn't always feel right - its weekly 'Soccerettes' feature saw women from all walks of life - booed based on their relationship status - remove a football shirt to reveal a slogan t-shirt.

What Sky did get right though was hiring much-loved presenter Tubes.

Originally hired as a production crew member at 16, Tubes has featured on the programme in various roles for 15 years now.

Soccer AM lost popularity in recent years, making it unsurprising that Sky decided to axe it from its schedule.

However, Tubes had a message for those who moan that the show isn't the same or as good as it used to be.

"It has changed," he told friend and colleague Ange on the latest episode of Tubes and Ange Golf Life. "It's massively changed, but it's had to change.

"I get fed up with people who say 'It's not what it used to be' - it can't be what it used to be.

"Because, the way the world has changed, you can't be doing the stuff we were doing back in the day! Some of the jokes [and] some of the innuendos - we can't do stuff like that!"

Tubes' original moniker, Peter the Test Tube Baby, probably wouldn't get the green light today.

Though many people will agree that Soccer AM has passed its sell-by-date, there has been no shortage of support for Tubes.

"Congratulations on an amazing career at sky Tubes. You’ve been incredible to watch," one fan commented online.

"People will slate Soccer AM these days for whatever reason. But we can’t deny it’s been the go-to watch for so many people growing up loving football over the years."

The final episode of Soccer AM will air on Saturday May 27, the day before the final day of the Premier League season.
