Sir Alex Ferguson to finally receive medal that eluded him for his entire career

The former Manchester United and Aberdeen manager will finally get the medal, almost 40 years later.

Sir Alex Ferguson will add another medal to his collection next month, when the former manager will be recognised for one of the most historic nights in Aberdeen's 119-year history.

Back in May 1983, Ferguson's Aberdeen became the third Scottish side in history to win a major European trophy when they beat the mighty Real Madrid to lift the Cup Winners’ Cup.

So why didn't Ferguson receive a medal in Gothenburg that night? UEFA rules at the time stated that only the starting 11 and five substitutes were handed medals to mark the achievement.

But ahead of the 40th anniversary next month, Ferguson and five others will finally be presented with a medal as part of proceedings at a special event planned for Pittodrie on Friday, May 12.

Ferguson's then-assistant Archie Knox will pick up a medal, as will midfielder Dougie Bell, who missed the final through injury.

Two medals will also be presented to the Donald family in recognition of then-director, Ian Donald, and his father and late chairman, Dick Donald.

A medal will also be granted posthumously to former vice-chairman, Chris Anderson.

Ferguson, who guided Aberdeen to three Scottish Premier Division titles during a trophy-laden eight-year reign at the Dons, revealed his delight at the decision.

“It’s a great honour to be receiving this medal and I am grateful to everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen," he said. “Their efforts, along with the cooperation of UEFA is much appreciated.

“It’s also fantastic to see some of the wonderful people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes during this hugely successful period for the club now being honoured.”

Sir Alex Ferguson spent 8 years at Aberdeen. Won them 9 domestic trophies and 2 european trophies ahead of Celtic and Rangers. Do you know how crazy this is?

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack also commented on the news.

He said: “We are extremely grateful to Chris Gavin of the AFC Heritage Trust and Duncan Fraser for their tireless work on this special project which will now ensure Sir Alex, Archie, Dougie, and the Donald, Anderson and Scott families are rightly recognised for the important part they played in the club’s success in 1983.

“The presentation of these medals during the Freedom of the City celebrations will give our supporters a further opportunity to play their part in recognising the inspirational achievements of these players and staff.”
