Como boss Cesc Fabregas has revealed what Sergio Busquets’ next career move will be after the Spanish midfielder confirmed he will retire at the end of the season.

Busquets moved to MLS side Inter Miami in 2023, ending an 18-year spell with Barcelona.

During his time with the Spanish giants, the 37-year-old won a plethora of major titles, including La Liga nine times and the Champions League three times.

Busquets, meanwhile, retired from international duty in 2022, having helped Spain to the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012.

However, Busquets will hang up his boots when the MLS season reaches its conclusion in December.

“I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It's been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of,” Busquets is quoted as saying by the BBC.

“I'm retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful. Thank you all very much, see you soon.”

And Fabregas, who retired in 2023 having played alongside Busquets for club and country, has revealed that his compatriot wants to become a coach once his playing career draws to a close.

“He’s a friend and an incredible person, as well as a [great] footballer,” Fabregas said at a press conference on Friday via Tuttomercatoweb.

“He and his family alike. I think the time has come; he should make room for the younger ones. But he’s that kind of player you fall in love with. The kind you don’t notice when he’s on the pitch, but when he doesn’t play, you realise how important he is.

“Huge congratulations because it was incredible to build such a career. He lives well, he sleeps well, even if, when you are young, it’s not easy to do that. He’s done it amazingly. He wants to become a coach, and I wish him the very best of luck.”

Fabregas reveals current Como player who is similar to Busquets

Fabregas also named a current Como player who shares a similar skillset to Busquets, stating: “I think (Maximo) Perrone has similar characteristics.

“He’s excellent in the short game, but he needs to grow more in making long passes. When you begin to look further and switch play…if he improves in that, he’ll enter another dimension and reach another level. He’s incredibly intelligent, like Busquets, with the potential to grow.”

Fabregas has watched his Como side make a solid start to the season having picked up seven points from the opening four games, with their sole defeat coming at Bologna.

I Lariani will look to make it back-to-back Serie A wins when they host Cremonese, who will be without the injured Jamie Vardy, on Saturday.
