Scott McTominay Becomes 'Prime Andrea Pirlo' With First-Half Midfield Masterclass Against Burnley

Scott McTominay Becomes 'Prime Andrea Pirlo' With First-Half Midfield Masterclass Against Burnley

"Scott 'Pirlo' McTominay!" one fan said. The Manchester United midfielder has put in a sensational first-half display at Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay has been compared by fans to a ‘prime Andrea Pirlo’ after producing a first-half midfield masterclass against Burnley on Thursday.

The 25-year-old midfielder fired Manchester United into the lead in the opening 10 minutes at Old Trafford with a superb finish.

Cristiano Ronaldo set up McTominay outside of the box and the Scotland international smashed the ball past Wayne Hennessey.

McTominay was later denied a sensational brace after his thunderbolt strike was tipped on to the post by Hennessey, only for Ronaldo to tap in the rebound into an empty net.

However, the United star’s sensational performance has been praised by fans on social media, with McTominay being compared to Italian legend Pirlo.

“Nah, this is not McTominay, it's Pirlo in disguise... but I love this McTominay,” one fan said.

Someone else tweeted: “McTominay thinks he’s Pirlo tonight!”

A third posted: Burnley [are] making McTominay look like Pirlo with the spaces they are giving him.”

Ronaldo missed a rare one-on-one chance in the opening 10 minutes, with the United superstar failing to even hit the target with his terrible shot.

Luke Shaw picked out Ronaldo with a superb lofted through-ball, with the 36-year-old Portuguese forward expertly controlling the ball with his first touch.

Ronaldo was clean through and only had Hennessey to beat from inside the box, but the former Juventus and Real Madrid star fired the ball over the bar.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner redeemed himself minutes later after setting up McTominay and scoring United’s third of the first half.

United doubled their advantage after Jadon Sancho cut in from the left and fired a low shot, which took a flick off the boot of Ben Mee, into the far corner.

Aaron Lennon pulled one back for Burnley before half-time, with the winger’s lovely finish landing in the far corner of David de Gea’s net.

United lead Burnley 3-1 at Old Trafford going into half-time.
