Messi's goal caps off a fine week for the Barcelona captain.
He ran the show in the Champions League in midweek on his 700th Barcelona appearance,
Messi managed to score as well as assist Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann in their 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Bu this evening, it was Diego Simeone's side who looked most likely to get all three points.
Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen made two incredible saves in the first half to keep the score level.
One save in particular saw the German save Mario Hermoso's strike with his legs from point blank range.
