Lionel Messi struck late for Barcelona to give them victory against Atletico Madrid.

The diminutive Argentine picked up the ball just inside the Atleti half and carried it to near the box.

He laid it off to Luis Suarez who gave Messi the ball back and he let rip with a first time shot to beat Jan Oblak at the near post.

Twitter reacted to the sensational strike.

Messi's goal caps off a fine week for the Barcelona captain.

He ran the show in the Champions League in midweek on his 700th Barcelona appearance,

Messi managed to score as well as assist Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann in their 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund.

It adds to his sizzling highlight reel of this season so far which includes spectacular free-kicks and insane passes.

Bu this evening, it was Diego Simeone's side who looked most likely to get all three points.

Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen made two incredible saves in the first half to keep the score level.

One save in particular saw the German save Mario Hermoso's strike with his legs from point blank range.


It's set to be a big week for the Argentine forward as he's likely to win his sixth Ballon d'Or tomorrow.

Furthermore, he'll be taking on Real Madrid in two weeks time in the first El Clasico of the season.

Barca and Real Madrid are currently locked in an intense battle at the top of La Liga.

This evening's result sees Ernesto Valverde's side move to the top of the table on goal difference.

If Messi is in this kind of form in a few weeks, then it could be big blow to land in the title race.
