Julian Alvarez could be a step closer to a return to the Premier League after two clubs watched him in action against Spurs on Wednesday night.

After finding the net in the first fixture, the Atletico Madrid striker scored and registered an assist in the Champions League round of 16 second leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Diego Simeone's men were beaten 3-2 on the night after Xavi Simons bagged a second half brace but Atletico secured passage to the quarter finals courtesy of a 7-5 aggregate scoreline.

Alvarez produced another fine display in Europe and according to Graeme Bailey from TEAMTalk did so in front of scouts from both Arsenal and Chelsea.

The report notes that the Premier League sides are both in the hunt for Alvarez's signature going into the summer transfer window.

Alvarez has reportedly told Atletico that he would be open to moving from the Riyadh Air Metropolitano after just two seasons.

He is believed to prefer to stay in La Liga with Barcelona, who are Atleti's next opponents in the Champions League.

But Arsenal and Chelsea are also keen, with Alvarez said to be open to a second stint in the Premier League after a trophy-laden two-year spell with Manchester City.

However, he would favour a move to the capital rather than back to the north and his situation is certainly one to watch following on from the World Cup, where he is set to lead the line for Argentina.

Alvarez joined City from River Plate for a fee of £14 million and scored 36 goals in 103 appearances, winning six trophies.

Despite his contributions, Alvarez did find himself on the bench because of the presence of talisman Erling Haaland and was allowed to leave for Atletico.

City received a club-record £81.8 million fee but Alvarez has been a revelation in Spain, with 46 goals and 16 assists in 100 appearances.

What has Alvarez said about his future?

Alvarez spoke about his future after the first leg win over Spurs and though he did say he is "happy" at Atletico, he said he did not know if he would still be at the club next season.

“Next season staying at Atletico? I do not know. Maybe yes, maybe no These are just things people say…” he said, as per Fabrizio Romano.

“I have nothing to say other than I’m happy here as on media a lot of things get talked about, but it’s nothing”.

“Anyone can post what they think or believe and it just grows bigger… I never said anything – I’m happy here.

“We’re very happy competing in all competitions.. so everything is going very well at Atletico Madrid”
