Liverpool appear to have moved one step closer to signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle - with one of their Premier League rivals agreeing a major transfer.

The Reds had a £110 million bid for Isak rejected at the beginning of August, with Newcastle holding out for at least £150 million.

According to the Daily Mail's Craig Hope, the Magpies will not even consider selling Isak unless they sign a replacement.

That has so far proved to be a fruitless task, with Eddie Howe's side missing out on Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

But their primary target appears to be Brentford's Yoane Wissa, who is valued at around £40 million.

Bees manager Keith Andrews confirmed on Thursday that Wissa would not be selected for his side's opening Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest because he is not 'ready to play' amid the transfer interest.

The DR Congolese international had a brief absence from the club over the summer but is now back in training.

However, a significant development has occurred on the eve of the new Premier League season.

The Athletic's David Ornstein reports that Brentford have agreed a club-record fee to sign forward Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth.

The Bees are set to pay £37 million, plus £5 million in add-ons, for the 23-year-old, who is said to be unhappy at Dean Court.

Ouattara, who scored seven Premier League goals last term including a hat-trick against Nottingham Forest, is a winger by trade but did play regularly as a striker for Bournemouth last season when other players were injured.

It remains to be seen whether his arrival will lead to Brentford sanctioning Wissa's sale.

But with Newcastle reporter Hope claiming that the Magpies will potentially consider selling Isak to Liverpool if they can acquire one striker, any move for the 28-year-old striker would finally give the Reds a small foothold as they attempt to get their British-record deal over the line before the end of the summer transfer window.
