The best goalkeepers in the Premier League ranked on shot-stopping ability may surprise some

Premier League goalkeepers have been ranked based on their shot-stopping ability and the list throws up some big surprises.

The best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season have been ranked based on how good their shot-stopping has been this season.

Football365 have used FBREF's date to rank the shot stopping ability of the Premier League number ones via the PSxG minus goals allowed model. Yep.

In short, the post-shot expected goals model calculates how likely a goalkeeper is to save a shot and uses that number comparatively to the number of goals they actually concede over a season.

The higher the number, the better a goalkeeper's save rate. Or luck...

Allison tops the list for Liverpool with an impressive 10.1 when goals conceded are taken away from PSxG, 0.9 ahead of Fulham's Bernd Leno, who boats a score of 9.2 and is finally bearing the fruits after his move from Arsenal.

David Raya, who has made the most saved in the league this season and is set to leave Brentford is third with 4.6 while Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga (3.7) and Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez (3.0) make up the top five.

Next are Jordan Pickford (2.7), Neto (1.7), and Crystal Palace duo Sam Johnstone (1.4) and Vicente Guaita (0.4) - players have to have eight appearances to qualify for the list.

Nick Pope makes the top ten with 0.3, while Lukasz Fabianski of West Ham is the first player with a minus score, with -0.1.

David De Gea is on -1.1, Jason Steele -1.7, Daniel Iversen -1.9 and Aaron Ramsdale -2.0, while Chelsea and Tottenham back-up goalkeepers Edouard Mendy and Fraser Forster score -2.1 and -2.5 respectively.

Further down are Keylor Navas (-2.7), Robert Sanchez (-2.8), Jose Sa (-3.6), Hugo Lloris (-4.1) and Dean Henderson (4.1), while, perhaps surprisingly, the champions' goalkeeper, Ederson, scored -5.1.

The bottom four goalkeepers on the list have all lost their places in their teams after starting the season as number one, with Mark Travers of Bournemouth scoring -6.9, Illan Meslier -12.4 and Gavin Bazunu a staggeringly low -16.6.

There is of course more to being a goalkeeper than saving shots. De Gea ranks 12th on the list but has won the Golden Glove, while Ederson is low down despite being on the verge of winning the treble.

Some goalkeepers, however, need to get back on the training field and practice their shot-stopping.
