Former Liverpool player and now pundit Jose Enrique believes following Mohamed Salah’s new deal, the Merseyside club will now announce an extension to Naby Keita’s contract.

Salah put pen to paper on a new lucrative package worth £350,000 a week on Friday, tying him down at Anfield until the summer of 2025.

The Egypt international’s contract was set to expire in the next 12 months, but the Reds opted to keep him and break their previously stringent wage structure.

Keita also finds himself in that position, with his current deal up in the summer of 2023.

Despite only starting 14 Premier League games last season, Jurgen Klopp sees the Guinean as a pivotal part of his squad, and is eager to reward his upturn in form last season with a new contract.

According to The Athletic, talks are ongoing with Keita, with an agreement expected to be reached soon.

With no further arrivals expected in the midfield department, Klopp is keen to maintain depth in this position and keep hold of the 27-year-old.

Former Liverpool left-back Enrqiue is adamant that this is the next piece of business that the club’s owners, FSG, are working on.

He tweeted: “I believe Keita is going to be announced soon with the new contract but what I’m wondering about is Firmino (and his contract).”

Enrique touched on the future of forward Roberto Firmino, who’s contract also expires in 12 months.

After extending Salah's deal and selling Sadio Mane, Firmino may be the one out of the famous trio which they decide they can afford to let go on a free in 2023.

As for Keita, reports suggest it is a matter of time until the new deal is agreed and made public.

The midfielder has struggled to find consistency since his £48 million move from RB Leipzig in 2018, but his form did improve in the second half of the last campaign.

Keita has made 116 appearances for Liverpool in four years at the club, scoring 11 goals.
