Fans can't believe Morgan Gibbs-White didn't make the England squad

Gibbs-White has had a brilliant end to the season with Nottingham Forest but has missed out to Conor Gallagher and Kalvin Phillips.

Gareth Southgate's decision to leave Morgan Gibbs-White out of the latest England squad has baffled fans, after he picked Conor Gallagher and Kalvin Phillips.

The Three Lions will continue their attempts to qualify for Euro 2024 once the club season ends next month, when they take on Malta and North Macedonia.

Southgate last brought a squad together in March when they kicked off the qualifying group with big wins over Ukraine and Italy.

It leaves the team in the perfect position to make it to Germany in just over a year's time, as long as there are no massive slip ups in the next eight games.

Ahead of Wednesday's announcement it was claimed that Raheem Sterling was due to miss out on the squad, with Southgate resting some players.

Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze and Brighton defender Lewis Dunk were amongst a number of players rumoured to be earning first call ups.

Those two were confirmed in the side but Forest star Gibbs-White was the unlucky name to miss out, despite his impressive form keeping Steve Cooper's side in the Premier League.

Fans are not impressed that the 23-year-old has been omitted. "Gibbs-White been better than Gallagher, Phillips started 1 game all season, Henderson below par," argued one fan.

"Gibbs white robbed, how’s Jordan Henderson still getting in?", questioned a second.

Mentioning Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey another replied, "How Gibbs-White and Ramsey are not getting a chance in these sort of games is beyond me. Both playing well week in week out whilst the above mentioned rot on the bench."

"Gallagher and Phillips over Gibbs-White? How? Based on performances that’s criminal," exclaimed a fourth.

Another pointed out Phillips' lack of football, replying, "Phillips in despite a combined ten minutes of league football this season."

And a fifth simply commented, "Connor Gallagher over MGW is absolutely criminal."

The usual annoyance of seeing Harry Maguire in the squad continues to be a contentious issue for fans, especially with Champions League semi-finalist Fikayo Tomori still missing.

Nick Pope's injury for Newcastle United seems to have passed most people by, leading to more criticism that the goalkeeper isn't included.

Many fans also expected to see Ollie Watkins included thanks to the suspension from football for the next eight months for Ivan Toney but the place has gone to Callum Wilson instead.

England take on Malta on June 16th which is less than a week after Manchester City's Champions League final against Inter Milan.

It means that Phillips, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden could have limited game time in the first match and they are more likely to play the Macedonia game three days later at Old Trafford.
