A number of high-profile England stars could be omitted from Gareth Southgate's upcoming squad.

The Three Lions resume their Euro 2024 qualifiers with back-to-back games against Malta and North Macedonia next month.

Southgate's team opened their campaign with victories over Ukraine and Italy as they look to make it four wins in a row in Group C.

The 52-year-old will name his squad today at 2pm, with reports suggesting some big names could be dropped following their form this season.

According to The Daily Mail, Raheem Sterling is among the England stars who face a spell away from the international side.

The 28-year-old has endured a difficult campaign at Chelsea following his summer move from Manchester City.

He's made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring just nine goals for his new club. But he has been blighted with injuries, which has impacted on his form.

Sterling has been an England regular under Southgate, who has formed a great bond with the forward. Having said that, his place is thought to be under threat ahead of the official announcement.

The England boss could also be without Sterling's club teammates Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell and Reece James, who have all missed the end of the season with injuries.

Brentford's Ivan Toney is unavailable for selection, too, after receiving an eight-month ban for breaching the FA's betting rules.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Newcastle United's Callum Wilson could be in line for a recall.

Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White has also been backed to be named in the England squad, with Jamie Carragher praising the player's recent performances.

He named Gibbs-White as the league's signing of the season, saying: "I was debating over two players today. I’m going to do a live change and go for Morgan Gibbs-White.

"I wouldn’t say he’s single-handedly kept Forest up but every time I watch him... he’s justified his price tag.

"I really do believe he should be in the next England squad. I’m going to go for Morgan Gibbs-White."
