Miguel Almiron has been playing with 'lucky' boots held together by glue this season

Miguel Almiron has been playing with 'lucky' boots held together by glue this season

Miguel Almiron is having a brilliant season with Newcastle and he credits his lucky boots.

Miguel Almiron has revealed his boots are being held together by glue after being damaged in October.

The Newcastle United star is enjoying a stunning season for the Magpies, scoring nine goals in all competitions.

Eddie Howe's side are currently third in the Premier League and boasting the best defence in the division, with just 11 goals conceded.

And they also have the chance to end a long wait for silverware after reaching the Carabao Cup final, where they will play Manchester United in a huge Wembley clash.

Almiron, a then-club record £21 million signing from Atlanta United in 2019, has been an integral part of their success this term and equalled his goals tally from his first three seasons.

But the Paraguayan's boots were badly damaged after he scored the winner against Spurs in the 2-1 win in October. That meant kitman Neil Stoker's abilities were put to the test.

The 28-year-old is hoping the cleats see out the season and promises to sign them and give them to Stoker.

“My lucky football boots had opened up like a sandwich,” Almiron told FourFourTwo.

"I told Neily that he had to do something because I’d scored again!

"He’s a genius – somehow he stuck it back together with glue and they’re still going strong. I just hope they’ll last me the season. Then I’ll sign them and give them to him as a present.”

Jack Grealish, who caused a stir for a surprise call-out of Almiron at Manchester City's title parade, wore battered boots while captaining Aston Villa to promotion in 2019.

He went for superstition over style, saying, "I got a few goals and I got a few assists and thought these were my lucky boots, I had to keep them!"

Almiron was unfazed by the taunt from Grealish, playing down talk the comments inspired his excellent run of form and wishing the England international the best.

However, Grealish has admitted he regrets the taunt and passed on an apology through his former teammate Matt Targett.

He told The Guardian: “Matt just said: ‘Jack, he’s a lovely kid, he’s harmless and he doesn’t speak a lot of English … he won’t really be bothered," the 27-year-old said.

“I didn’t want to reply [to Almiron] on social media because you dig a bigger hole and I’ve been there with other stuff.”
