Mason Mount will NOT play for England despite call-up for Euro 2024 qualifiers

Mason Mount will be removed from the England squad, after Graham Potter announced he wouldn't play for the national team, despite call up.

For the first time since they were knocked out of the World Cup at the quarter finals stages, England will meet up for Euro 2024 qualifiers next week.

Gareth Southgate's men kick off their latest campaign, with the manager having decided to stay on for next summer's tournament, against Italy and Ukraine.

On Thursday, he announced his latest squad, with Ivan Toney included for his recent good form, after missing out on the World Cup, as he awaits his hearing on betting on football.

Two of the manager's decisions particularly baffled fans, and for once it wasn't Harry Maguire's inclusion, with Ben White omittance and Kalvin Phillips latest call up surprising people.

Unsurprisingly to any one who has followed Southgate's time as manager, Mount was amongst his squad for the next few games, despite some poor form for Chelsea.

However, Blues' boss Potter has now revealed that his player won't be in the squad, "Raheem has a problem with his hamstring. It's not too serious but he'll miss the game at the weekend and the international trip," the manager said of Raheem Sterling.

The 24-year-old has been struggling with a pelvic injury recently, with his club deciding that he needs more time to recover, missing the weekend's game with Everton.

Southgate will now have to decide if he's going to call anyone up to replace the former Derby County loanee, with his options in the middle of the park reduced.

In midfield he is left with Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, James Maddison, Declan Rice and Phillips.

Gallagher has also been out of form this season, and not played much football in the west London side's last five league games, whilst Phillips has been injured on off form.

Mount has been linked to both Liverpool and Manchester United, with his contract due to expire in less than 18 months time, and his time at Chelsea looks like it could soon be over.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that chances of him signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge are decreasing, with the player's dad getting his son a new agent, potentially to negotiate a move away.
