Jamie Carragher jokingly referred to Gary Neville as a "s**tbag" after the Manchester United legend did not say who he wanted to take over his former club.

The takeover process at the club remains ongoing, almost seven months after the Glazer family announced they were seeking 'strategic alternatives'.

The American owners have a range of options in front of him. Among the leading contenders are Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim, through his Nine Two Foundation, and the joint proposal from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS. Whilst Sheikh Jassim only wants a full takeover, Ratcliffe is seeking a majority stake.

Meanwhile, ESPN report that, via sources, minority investors are still in the race to take over the club.

The process looked as if it had sparked into life on Monday evening, when a report claimed that Sheikh Jassim's bid had been successful. Overnight, United's share price spiked by nearly 25 per cent.

However, The Athletic revealed that the original report came from a Twitter account with less than 300 followers, and reporting of it from a major Qatari newspaper was merely that - a report.

Sheikh Jassim's camp told Press Association that claims over a successful bid were 'pure speculation' - meaning we are still yet to find out who will take over United.

Understandably, however, it has been a hot topic over recent months - and it was once again addressed by Neville, Carragher and Roy Keane.

Carragher, Neville debate Man Utd takeover

On an edition of The Overlap on Tour, Neville was reluctant to give an answer when asked by host Josh Denzel who he would want to take over United.

He said: "Between the two bidders [Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe]? Honestly, if either of them won it wouldn't bother me. We can't control it."

Carragher then asked the United legend to pick one, after which he replied: "I can give you strengths and weaknesses of both. I'll give you the strengths and weaknesses, I'll give you the arguments, because there's a lot of things... it's a complex argument."

Carragher then bit back: "You just haven't got the bottle to say which one."

Neville tried to argue his defence, stating that he would give his preferred option, before Carragher exclaimed: "Who's the s**tbag now?" to a round of laughter from the crowd.

The former United right-back and Sky Sports pundit has regularly hit out at the Glazer family over their running of the club.

He was quoted by the Daily Express on Monday as saying: "Honestly, I think everyone has got to the point whereby what the Glazers do, they erode every little last bit of energy out of everything that they do.

"They know nothing about Manchester or the north west of the England and the tradition of football in this part. They have not embedded themselves in the local culture."

The Overlap on Tour airs on Wednesday 14th June on Sky Max, with new episodes weekly.
