Fernandes was fuming at Rashford and co after Newcastle loss, McClaren had to step in

He was not happy.

Burno Fernandes was fuming at Manchester United trio Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Lisandro Martinez after the club’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, a report has claimed

On Sunday, Newcastle leapfrogged Erik ten Hag’s men to move into third place in the Premier League table and avenge their Carabao Cup final defeat against the Red Devils.

The Magpies' victory has seen United fall to fourth, just one point clear of Tottenham Hotspur in fifth, while Ten Hag’s side have now gone without a win or a goal in their past three top-flight games.

Indeed, if Spurs beat Everton on Monday evening United will drop out of the Champions League spots.

Ten Hag has not seen his side win a league match since 19 February and after the encounter the Dutchman said he “totally agreed” with Luke Shaw’s assessment that Newcastle won the game “on passion, desire, hunger and attitude”.

Shaw and Ten Hag were not the only members of the United ranks to express their frustration after the bruising defeat.

Fernandes fuming at Man Utd trio

According to the Manchester Evening News, Fernandes raged at several of his teammates at the final whistle.

As some players trudged off the St James’ Park pitch towards the tunnel, the Portugal international ordered a trio of United stars to go and acknowledge the away support.

MEN Sport reported that Martinez, Martial and United’s star man Rashford were all instructed to applaud the United fans by Fernandes and assistant coach Steve McClaren.

McClaren also had to step in to separate Ten Hag from Newcastle counterpart Eddie Howe, as the two managers clashed in the second half.

After the game, Ten Hag said: “I totally agree [with Shaw] and that was also my assessment.”

“They had more desire, determination and aggression. I was surprised we couldn’t match it.

“I don’t think we underestimated Newcastle but I do think we have to be much better.

“I know this team has the quality to score goals but we didn’t create too many chances. Today was not a good one for us.”

The Sky Sports camera also showed Diogo Dalot appearing to argue with Antony, who was replaced by Jadon Sancho mid-way through the second half. However, it remains unclear as to what the pair were speaking about.
