Gabby Agbonlahor claims Man City treble win would eclipse Man United in 1999 and Arsenal’s Invincibles

Gabby Agbonlahor claims Man City treble win would eclipse Man United in 1999 and Arsenal’s Invincibles

Manchester City are on course to win the treble this season

Gabby Agbonlahor has said that Manchester City would eclipse the achievements of Manchester United’s 1999 team and Arsenal’s Invincibles if they go on to win the treble this season.

Pep Guardiola’s men sealed a place in the FA Cup final after a hattrick from Riyad Mahrez secured a 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon.

Aside from the FA Cup, City are still firmly in the Premier League title race and are in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

On current form, City are favourites to land all three trophies as Guardiola looks to become a treble winner with the club.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Aston Villa striker Agbonhalor believes City will become the best Premier League team ever if they manage to win the treble.

He said: “I think they would push the 2008 Manchester United with Tevez, Ronaldo and Rooney. I think they would push them.

“The football they’re playing, their passing.”

Agbonlahor was then asked if they would eclipse both United’s treble-winning team in 1999 and Arsenal’s Invincibles.

The former England striker replied: “If they win the Treble, I really do. The football we’re watching is different. Everyone knows their positions. The squad depth they have got as well.”

Prior to their win against Sheffield United, Guardiola refused to talk about the treble.

He said: “Look how far away we are before we talk about that. Just 11 games, yeah, yeah, just 11 games. We're far away.

“I've said many times, how many times in this amazing country have a treble been done? It's one. Our neighbours.”

City are back in Premier League action on Wednesday in what is billed as a potential title decider against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

The Gunners are currently five points ahead of City but Guardiola’s men have two games in hand.

Can City win the treble this season? Only time will tell.
