A number of Chelsea staff members are 'resigned' to Liverpool target Mason Mount not signing a new deal with the club, according to a new report.

Mount's future has been heavily discussed in recent months, with Chelsea attempting to convince him to agree to a new long-term contract.

The England star's current deal expires in the summer of 2024, and the Evening Standard reported earlier this week that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is personally handling talks over a potential seven-year extension.

However, it is claimed that 'little progress has been made', which has brought Mount's future under further scrutiny.

The same report suggests that a number of top Premier League sides, including Liverpool, are keen to test Chelsea's resolve by making a bid for the player.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has previously praised Mount, describing him as at least a '£60 million player', and the 24-year-old's skillset, which includes his goalscoring ability, excellent work rate and strong off the ball movement, could make him an ideal addition to Liverpool's struggling midfield.

Now, the Reds have been handed another boost in their pursuit of the player.

Mason Mount update issued amid Liverpool interest

According to The Telegraph's Mike McGrath, some people at Chelsea are 'resigned' to Mount not wanting to sign up for the Blues project moving forward.

The report will come as a blow to Chelsea, who remains an important player for the side under Graham Potter despite the influx of new signings since the summer.

But it could open up an opportunity for Liverpool to swoop and seal a deal for a player who registered 21 goal contributions in the Premier League last season.

McGrath claims that if no breakthrough is found, a decision will have to be made in the summer as to whether Mount signs a new deal at Chelsea. As he is entering the final 12 months of his contract at that stage, any decision could potentially be final, and could then lead to the midfielder deciding to aim for pastures new.
