Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently spoken out on the links between Liverpool and Enzo Fernandez, an exciting, young midfielder from Benfica.

A recent story from Portuguese news outlet O Jogo says that the Red’s are extremely interested in Fernandez, and that they don’t ‘rule out’ signing the Argentinian in either the short-term, or the long-term.

After an impressive season for River Plate last season, the midfielder attracted strong interest from many top clubs, and he eventually signed for Benfica in July 2022.

He has been instrumental in his side’s flawless start to the season, which sees them sitting top of their domestic league and second in their UCL group, with the 37-time Premeira Liga winners yet to lose a game.

A prospect like Fernandez, who has a release clause of over £100m, would be the perfect signing for Liverpool considering the worrying age profile of their current midfielders.

Thiago, Henderson and Milner are all deep into their 30s, and Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho are not far off joining them, so there is an obvious need for a rebuild in this area.

Although the Argentinian would be a great fit, Fabrizio Romano poured cold water over the recent speculation surrounding the Merseyside club's interest.

Speaking in his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, the Italian did admit that Liverpool were in the market for a big midfield signing, but the links surrounding Enzo Fernandez were purely just rumours.

“We’ve heard a lot about Jude Bellingham, and now Enzo Fernandez is making headlines!"

"Honestly, I think Liverpool will be linked with 20-30 midfielders in the next months as it’s public knowledge that they’re looking for a top midfielder in 2023,” said Romano.

“As for Enzo Fernandez, he has just arrived at Benfica, he’s focused on Benfica and on the World Cup – no one close to him wants to speak about a potential transfer now. Let’s see in the summer!”

Whilst it is clear that Jude Bellingham is Klopp’s main target, it remains to be seen whether he will dip into the market to find an exciting partner for the Englishman, with Fernandez potentially being a great fit.
