'He Has To Leave' - Liverpool Talent Urged To Leave The Club

The former Tottenham defender believes this young player will need to leave Liverpool for the sake of his career.

Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton believes Joe Gomez "has to leave" Liverpool if he is to get more game time.

Gomez has always been viewed as one of Liverpool’s most promising talents, but a move for the young defender could be on the horizon.

Having dropped down to fourth in the pecking order, Gomez is finding game time hard to come by at Anfield, and according to pundit Alan Hutton, a move may be the sensible option for the 25-year-old.

Speaking to the Football Insider, Hutton had this to say:

“For him now at the age he’s at, I think he has to leave.

“I think Liverpool as a club will know what he’s capable of. That’s probably the main thing about it."

"He did come in and play alongside (Virgil) Van Dijk and he flourished up until the injury, which was a shame."

“I think he has to go and try and get football. Liverpool have brought in players and that’s knocked him down the pecking order.”

“So it doesn’t look like he’s in a position to command a start within the team.

“For me personally I think he has to leave, he needs a new challenge. He has to go somewhere where he’s going to play week in, week out and get back to that level from before the injury."

Last season saw Gomez shifted to a makeshift, backup, right-back to cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold, if he needed the rest.

But with the recent signing of Calvin Ramsey from Aberdeen, Liverpool will not be needing cover in the form of a right-back, and this will see Gomez’s game time limited even more.

The England international has been linked with a £30 million move to Aston Villa in recent weeks, a deal that would see him reunite with Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard.

However, it has recently been reported that Liverpool are trying to tie Gomez down to a new, long-term contract at Anfield, with expectation that Gomez will play a much more prominent role in the future.

The exceptional form of both Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip has kept Gomez out the side, but with both players set to turn 31 in the next few weeks, Gomez may start to see more first-team opportunities arise throughout the course of the season.

Liverpool will also be wanting to keep Gomez in their ranks this summer in order to avoid the injury crisis that dampened the clubs title chances during the 2020/21 season.
