Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been placed on Real Madrid's transfer shortlist, according to reports in Spain.

Nunez only signed for Liverpool in the summer - the Uruguay international joining the club from Benfica in a deal which could eventually reach £85m.

According to Spanish news outlet Defensa Central, Madrid have put Nunez on their shortlist of attacking targets in the next transfer window.

Their desire to sign a forward comes after Karim Benzema suffered a thigh injury, ruling him out of France's World Cup campaign.

Madrid are said to be considering several targets, including Tottenham striker Richarlison, Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus and PSV forward Cody Gakpo.

Klopp: Nunez has incredible potential

Nunez has already scored nine goals in his first 18 games for Liverpool and was described as an "incredible" talent by Jurgen Klopp earlier this season.

When asked just how good the striker could go on to be for Liverpool, Klopp said: "Nobody knows, he doesn't know. Nobody knows, there is a lot [of potential] and it is so exciting, but he has to stay fit, he has to be available all the time," said Klopp.

“That's all important in the life of a professional football player. We have to work on all in all different areas. Then, the potential is incredible. It's not only speed, the attitude is really good, he is a real worker.

"Again, I tell you – and I know there are some people out there who think, 'Technically, not sure, first touch...' – it is incredible.

"That he doesn’t bring it on the pitch all the time, the first touch might be here or there sometimes, is nothing to do with technique. It is just a bit too late, awareness, orientation and all these kind of things, but it is all possible to develop and to learn.

"That's where we are at, it's really exciting, but where it can go I have no idea."
