Kylian Mbappe slammed for 'selfish' behaviour in Real Madrid defeat

Spanish and French media are not happy with Kylian Mbappe following Real Madrid's shock 1-0 loss to Real Betis.

Real Madrid suffered their first loss since Jose Mourinho's surprise return on Friday evening as a goal from former Tottenham Hotspur striker Troy Parrott secured a 1-0 loss for Real Betis.

During the 1-0 loss, Real Madrid had two chances to equalise, with the most damning being Mbappe's injury-time penalty miss which summed up a performance that European media has branded as 'selfish' and one 'to forget' for the star striker.

In the 81st minute, with the scores locked at 0-0, Parrott was able to put the home side ahead with a close range effort following a rebound after a stunning save from Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Shortly after, Real Madrid substitute Carlos Espi had a late bicycle kick goal equaliser disallowed on 87 minutes, with Mourinho's side given one last chance to salvage a point after they were awarded a penalty in the third minute of added time.

But an unlikely miss from Mbappe denied Real Madrid, despite protests from the Spanish giants claiming that the spot kick should have been retaken due to apparent encroachment from Betis defender Marc Bartra.

Summing up the striker's performance, French outlet Journal du Real accused him of failing to step up and lead his team, handing him a 2/10 rating and labelling it a "performance to forget".

A "rare night" of joylessness with "stingy" pressing and "imprecise" technical quality was how Le Parisien described Mbappe's game at El Estadio La Cartuja.

Meanwhile Spanish outlet Spanish outlet ELDesmarque gave the Frenchman just a 1/10, describing him as "selfish" when he had to ball in dangerous areas, as he instead focused on his "wasteful" finishing."

Luckily for Mbappe, this brutal assessment of his performance appears not to be shared by Real Madrid head coach Mourinho, who refused to criticise his players, instead suggesting that refereeing decisions had cost his side.

Speaking post-match, he said: "The team played a great game,” Mourinho told reporters after the match. “Sometimes you lose and you don't know why or how to explain it.

“The Betis players are smarter than the Real Madrid players, who are pure, naive.

"In the first play of the game, it was a clear yellow card for a player who fouled Valverde , and then another yellow for a player who committed a serious foul on Vini Jr.

“The Madrid players immediately bounced back, but the Betis players are smarter and, with the support of a fantastic fanbase that pushes, pressures, and achieves these kinds of things."

He continued: "“We’re naive in the sense that Betis players try to influence the referee's decision over the smallest things. Real Madrid players, in situations that should warrant a yellow card, like when he stepped on Valverde, stayed on their feet. That's worthy of a Real Madrid captain."

Later addressing Mbappe's penalty miss, adding: “And the missed penalty is like I always say: when one of us goes to take a penalty, we all go together.”

Barcelona now already have the chance move three points clear of their title rivals as they face Valencia on Sunday evening.
