Troy Parrott scores his first Real Betis goal to beat Real Madrid as match ends in chaos

Former Tottenham striker Troy Parrott has handed Jose Mourinho his first loss since returning to Real Madrid - by scoring his first goal for Real Betis in a 1-0 win.

Parrott signed for Betis from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the summer transfer window for a fee in the region of €20 million.

Having come through Spurs' academy, he only made four appearances for the north London club and was sold in the summer of 2024.

With AZ, Parrott smashed 51 goals in just 94 appearances, including 10 goals in 15 games in last season's Conference League.

He was close to joining newly-relegated Championship side West Ham, but the move fell through as the Hammers refused to meet AZ's demands.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side might be regretting that decision now, as Parrott has scored the winning goal in a famous victory for his new side.

In the 81st minute, with the scores locked at 0-0, midfielder Nelson Deossa rose highest from a corner to force a fine low save from Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

But Parrott was waiting to fire in from close range on the rebound to spark jubilant scenes among the home fans at the Benito Villamarin Stadium.

What followed next was remarkable, with new Real Madrid signing Carlos Espi seeing a bicycle kick goal disallowed on 87 minutes.

Mourinho's side then won a penalty in the third minute of added time, but Kylian Mbappe missed from the spot to deny Real a point.

They were therefore left to rue their first defeat of the La Liga season, and their first since Mourinho's return to the club at the beginning of the summer.
