'Naive' - Jose Mourinho slams his own Real Madrid team after they lose to Real Betis

Jose Mourinho has slammed his own Real Madrid players as "naive" after suffering his first defeat in his second spell at Los Blancos.

Mourinho's side won their first three games of the season in La Liga but were beaten by Real Betis on Friday night.

Former Spurs striker Troy Parrott, a new signing for Betis, scored his first goal for the club to seal a memorable win for the Andalusian outfit.

Kylian Mbappe saw a stoppage time penalty saved by Alvaro Valles in a chaotic end to the game which also featured a disallowed bicycle kick from Carlos Espi.

Barcelona could already move three points clear of their title rivals and Mourinho wasted no time going after his own players post-match.

While he was happy with their performance and effort, Mourinho was critical of his players for not doing more to get the opposition players booked.

He said: "My players are naive. There are some plays that are textbook yellow cards, that the players failed to get the opponents booked for.

Let me give you an example: the first minute of the game, a Betis player stepped on Fede Valverde’s foot.

"A 'step on foot' is a textbook yellow card.

"And what does Fede Valverde do? He stays on his feet, doesn’t even fall. Meanwhile Betis players exaggerated every foul so much, that you’d think they need an ambulance.”

Mourinho, who was yellow carded in the game, accused his players of getting "straight back up" after when something deserves a yellow card and called it "an important factor" coming up against a team with that mentality.

He did, however, defend his team and said they played "very well", commenting that "the players' attitude was fantastic, and we did everything to win”.

Mourinho also hit headlines for a moment with Vinicius Jr after the defeat at the Estadio de La Cartuja.

The Portuguese walked on to the pitch after the final whistle and greeted his players. However, his interaction with Vinicius looked less than friendly.

Mourinho and Vinicius walked towards one another and did share a slight handshake.

But Vinicius kept it very brief and appeared to ignore his manager before walking away in an extremely awkward moment.

Vinicius was heavily linked with a shock move to Arsenal in the summer transfer window but committed himself to Real by signing a contract extension.

Real return to action on Tuesday when they host Mourinho's former club Inter Milan in their opening Champions League fixture at the Bernabeu.
