Inter Miami are set to hire a manager Lionel Messi has worked with before

Messi surprised the world by deciding his time in European football was over and will play MLS football with Inter Miami.

Inter Miami are without a manager after Phil Neville's sacking last week but are now looking to reunite Lionel Messi with a former manager.

Oh cruel world, you have stopped us getting the magic of seeing the younger of the Neville brothers trying to dish out advice and tell Messi what to do.

In this instance the 'world' in question is David Beckham, with the Inter Miami owner taking the tough decision to sack his mate.

Just days later and it was announced that arguably the greatest player to have ever touched grass was signing for the MLS side.

Everyone thought that the World Cup winner might have picked going to Saudi Arabia, as is the current trend, or ending up back at Barcelona.

Certainly the Spanish giants thought that might be the case or at least club president Joan Laporta's salty statement suggests they did.

If the 35-year-old can't go to Barcelona then Inter are going to bring Barcelona to the mountain, with the American side eyeing up five former teammates to play alongside their new acquisition.

And it's not stopping there with the club expected to make former Barca and Argentina manager Gerardo 'Tata' Martino their new boss, according to Argentine journalist Ariel Senosiain.

The 60-year-old only had one year at the Nou Camp and failed to win any major trophies, losing in the Copa del Rey final to fierce rivals Real Madrid.

He was also in charge of the Argentina national team for two years and had two more final failures, twice losing in the Copa America final on penalties to Chile.

Messi missed his attempt in the shoot-out of the second of those losses and announced his international retirement immediately after, before returning later on.

Martino does have experience managing in America and won the MLS Cup in 2018 with Atlanta United so Beckham will be hoping for similar success.

Neville led Miami to bottom of the Eastern Conference at the start of this season, having won just five times in the opening 16 games.

They did at least advance in the US Open Cup on Wednesday night, defeating USL Championship side Birmingham Legion FC.
