Theo Walcott predicts where Real Madrid would come in the Premier League

Theo Walcott has predicted where Real Madrid would finish if they played in the Premier League – and his thoughts have sparked plenty of debate amongst fans on social media.

With 24 games played, Real Madrid are currently two points clear of Barcelona in the La Liga title race.

Alvaro Arbeloa's side are the favourites to win the league this season, according to stats website Opta, who believe Los Blancos have a 57.8% chance of being crowned the champions of Spain come May.

But how would they cope in England's top flight? Earlier this week, Amazon Prime pundits Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Theo Walcott were asked that very question while on Champions League duty.

Rooney predicted Madrid would finish in the top four but added: "Some of the away games would be a lot more difficult than what they face over the calendar year in Spain."

Alan Shearer also anticipated a strong charge for the Spanish side, although the Premier League's all-time top scorer did have some doubts.

"They might struggle for consistency but when you look at the quality they have, particularly in forward areas, they would outscore most teams," said Shearer. "I’m sure they’d concede a few, but top four for me. I don’t think they’d win it, though."

Finally, former Arsenal and Southampton forward Theo Walcott gave his take on the subject.

"Good question," he began. "I feel they may struggle at places like Crystal Palace away, Leeds away, and St James' Park. The weather plays its part as well."

Walcott then predicted an eighth-place finish for Madrid.

"There’s going to be a lot of Madrid fans that are not happy with that, but I do feel there are teams that are more equipped in the Premier League, and I don’t think Real Madrid would be one of those teams," he added.

To put Walcott's comments into perspective, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea finished in the top four last season, while Newcastle, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Brighton made up the top eight.

Brighton finished in eighth after picking up 16 wins from 38 games.
