A thread titled ‘Kevin De Bruyne, the worst big-game player of all time’ has gone viral after Belgium crashed out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Going into the last round of matches in Group F, Belgium needed to win against Croatia in order to secure a place in the last 16 of the tournament.

However, they were unable to break through a stubborn Croatian defence. Second-half substitute Romelu Lukaku squandered not one but four huge chances to put his side ahead.

In the end, Croatia held on for a hard-fought 0-0 draw, sending Belgium packing at the group stage.

Moments after the final whistle, a thread emerged on Twitter which slammed Manchester City’s Belgian star De Bruyne, who has been accused of going missing in the big moments.

The thread started with De Bruyne’s comments about the current Belgium side having no chance of winning the World Cup due to them being too old.

De Bruyne’s performance against Morocco was then heavily scrutinised.

After that, De Bruyne’s performance against France in the 2018 World Cup was described as the single worst performance in a World Cup.

De Bruyne’s performances in the big matches for City don’t make good reading either as he didn’t manage a single goal or assist in the Champions League latter stages in multiple seasons.

A truly damning assessment of a player that has been labelled as the best midfielder in world football.

After Belgium’s shock exit, manager Roberto Martinez announced he will step down from his role.

The Spaniard said: “Yes, that was my last game. It has been six years.

“I arrived with the clear idea of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Then we became so engaged with the project and won a bronze medal. I'm so proud of these players. It has been amazing.

“Since 2018 I had many opportunities to leave and take jobs at club level, but I wanted to stay loyal.”
