Jose Mourinho is being investigated for his extraordinary rant against referee after Roma draw

Mourinho was unhappy with the referee in Roma's draw with Monza, which could cost his side a Champions League place.

Jose Mourinho is being investigated by Italian football, following his latest comments, as Roma's Champions League chances take a hit.

I know what you're thinking, 'it doesn't sound like Mourinho to be in trouble for a run-in with a referee,' but it's actually not the first time.

A couple of months ago, the Roma boss was given a red card during a game, with fans accusing him of using a very British insult to pick up his marching orders.

It was the third time in the campaign that he'd been sent away from the touchline, which was far more than any of his players, and ended with him threatening legal action.

Despite his anger sometimes getting the better of him during the campaign, it still looked like the Giallorossi would have enough about them to qualify for the Champions League.

However, recent form has put hopes of a top four finish in Serie A in doubt, as the mad scramble for Europe's elite competition goes on.

That poor form continued into Wednesday night, as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Monza, leaving the former Real Madrid manager rather annoyed.

"This was the worst referee I have encountered in my entire career," the 60-year-old told DAZN after full time.

"Believe me, I have dealt with many bad referees. Usually, when I talk about referees, it is because they have a direct influence on the game. In this case, I don't think that is true.

"But he is horrible, he makes no human connection with anyone, he has no empathy, he gives a red card to a player who slips because he is exhausted at the 96th minute."

The Portuguese manager was annoyed that right-back Zeki Celik was sent off late in the game, meaning he will be missing from the huge clash with Inter Milan on Sunday.

Mourinho did miss out on a red card of his own, but the manager did get his seventh booking of the season, making you wonder if it's the referees fault.

"Unfortunately, this too is a sign of Roma's weakness as a club because we do not have the strength of other clubs who can say we don't want this referee," the two time Champions League winner added.

"I stopped working 20-30 minutes from the end, because I knew he would give me a red card for anything.

"There are clubs that say I don't want this referee and Roma either don't have this capability or the DNA or anything else. It's horrible.

"With the few players I have in my squad, I could not get a red card. I really, badly wanted to say something, but I could not afford to be without my lads. This is why I left the field early, I didn't even want to look at him."

Mourinho even claimed he was ready for the trouble too, adding, "I am not stupid. I went to the game vs Monza with a microphone & recorded everything from the moment I left the dressing room, until I returned.

"I had to protect myself."

According to Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio, the The Federal Prosecutor's Office are now investigating Mourinho for his claims about the referee and clubs being able to pick their officials.

It could lead to him also missing the game against Inter from the sidelines, something that he claimed he couldn't afford to let happen.

The Nerazzurri, who used to be manager by Mourinho, are currently two points clear of Roma, as well as Atalanta, and AC Milan, in the final Champions League spot.

There is two other chances for Mourinho's side to get into the Champions League, mainly through their involvement in the Europa League, where they are in the semi-finals.

Juventus' potential exclusion from UEFA competitions next season could also help one of the other Italian teams get into the top competition.
