John Terry brutally fires back after comedian suggests he should replace Gary Lineker

Gary Lineker stepped back from Match of the Day on Friday

Chelsea legend John Terry has fired back at comedian David Baddiel after he suggested the former England man should replace Gary Lineker on Match of the Day.

This week, former England striker Lineker received backlash after he tweeted about the government’s new asylum policy being similar to Nazi Germany.

On Friday, the BBC announced that Lineker will step back from the programme.

A statement read: “The BBC has been in extensive discussions with Gary and his team in recent days.

“We have said that we consider his recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines.

“The BBC has decided that he will step back from presenting Match of the Day until we've got an agreed and clear position on his use of social media.”

On the back of the BBC’s decision, Chelsea fan Baddiel took the opportunity to poke fun at Terry.

The comedian wrote on Twitter: “I wonder if, somewhere, John Terry is practising using an autocue.”

Baddiel’s joke did not go down well with Terry, who responded with: “Don’t use my name for a cheap laugh on social media!” Whilst adding a clown emoji at the end of his tweet.

This is not the first time Terry has fired back, as he did in the 15/16 season after being criticised by Robbie Savage.

He said: “I’ve come under criticism, individually, from certain players and individuals, players I’ve looked up to and played alongside.

“I’ve taken that on the chin: Rio, Carra, Neville, the very best I’ve come up against in the game. I take that on the chin. When others speak, maybe I don’t take it on the chin.

“When players have not had a career, played at a really bad level in their career… Robbie Savage being one. He’s dug me out a couple of times.

“You take it as a footballer, as an individual. I’ll take it from the Rios, Carraghers and Neville. All day long. From others? Nah.”
