Liverpool star absolutely destroyed by fans online after 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest

Liverpool star absolutely destroyed by fans online after 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest

"Talented boy, but never a first-choice option for me..."

Liverpool fans ruthlessly slammed Joe Gomez following his defensive performance against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's team were unable to build on from their big win over Manchester City last weekend as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Steve Cooper's side.

Former Liverpool player Taiwo Awoniyi scored the game's only goal as he converted from close range in the 55th minute.

The goal started with Gomez's error on the halfway line as he pulled down the eventual scorer.

The 25-year-old defender failed to replicate a similar performance to his last outing, where he starred against Man City and kept Erling Haaland quiet.

Liverpool fans made their feelings known over Gomez's abject showing at the back on social media.

One Twitter user wrote: "Gomez is setting up forest's attack more times than forest themselves."

A second tweeted: "Sell Joe Gomez. Right now."

A third added: "Honestly our fanbase defend Gomez better than he himself can defend."

A fourth commented: "Oh look, Gomez again. Player running back towards his own penalty box and what does he do?"

Another said: "Joe Gomez is inconsistent. Talented boy, but never a first-choice option for me."

Liverpool appeared to turn a corner with their victory over the English champions.

But they seem to be back to square one having lost to Forest, who claim just their second league win of the season.

The defeat leaves Liverpool in seventh place with 16 points on the board.

As for Forest, they move off the foot of the table. But they remain in the relegation zone with 9 points to their name.

Speaking after the result, Klopp said: "I can explain the performance, but not the result.

"We have to finish our set-pieces - we had so many free players. Bobby, Virgil - they have to put the game to bed. The goal we conceded is a big mistake from us.

"We gave them all of their chances - we kept making the wrong passes. They closed the centre."
