Gini Wijnaldum has been named the 'Ligue 1 Flop of the Year' after an underwhelming first season with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Netherlands international made the move to Paris on a free transfer from Liverpool after his contract expired and the two parties could not agree fresh terms.

Wijnaldum opened his account for PSG with a Champions League brace in a 2-2 draw against RB Leipzig in November but the general consensus is that he didn't do the business.

He made 22 starts in 38 Ligue One games and didn't play a full 90 minutes in over two months at the end of the campaign, leading to his omission from Louis van Gaal's Dutch squad.

Gini Wijnaldum, who left Liverpool last summer for PSG, has been voted as Ligue 1 Flop Signing of the Year.

It was voted by the fans. With over 100,000 votes combined with the input of an expert panel, Wijnaldum ‘won’ the award by a “wide margin."

And Get French Football News have named the former Newcastle midfielder as their flop of their season in their awards.

The decision came as a result of 100,000 votes cast and the thoughts of GFFN's experts, with Wijnaldum the unfortunate winner of poll.

At Liverpool, Wijnaldum was a hugely important player for five years under Jurgen Klopp, helping the Reds to Champions League and Premier League successes.

He famously scored a brace against Barcelona on a memorable European night at Anfield and was always a man for big occasions.

PSG stole a march on Barcelona to secure his services, drafting him in as one of many star-studded free transfers alongside Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

But although he lifted the league title, the move hasn't quite worked out and Wijnaldum admitted he wasn't "completely happy" early on in his spell.

The Feyenoord youth product was linked with a return to English football in January but remained at the Parc des Princes until the end of the campaign.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino is widely expected to be leaving before next season rolls around, potentially giving Wijnaldum a fresh start.

The 31-year-old is one year into a three-year deal in the French capital.
