Wrexham fans brand summer signing 'not good enough' after West Brom defeat

Rob Mc and Ryan Reynolds watched on from the stands as the Red Dragons suffered their second Championship defeat.

Wrexham supporters slammed a summer signing for his performance during their 3-2 defeat against West Bromwich Albion at the Racecourse on Saturday.

It was a party atmosphere in North Wales ahead of kick-off before Wrexham’s first second-tier home fixture since 1982.

Co-owners Rob Mc and Ryan Reynolds watched on from the stands, but it was the visitors who spoiled the Red Dragons’ party.

Former Everton man Isaac Price opened the scoring 20 minutes in before new Wrexham signing Lewis O’Brien levelled three minutes before the half-time interval.

West Brom’s second-half substitute Jed Wallace put the Baggies ahead within a minute of being introduced to make it 2-1 before Price secured a brace with nine minutes to play.

Substitute Sam Smith pulled a consolation back for Phil Parkinson’s side before the match finished 3-2 to West Brom.

The win put the Midlands outfit top of the Championship while Wrexham dropped to 22nd after two consecutive league defeats.

And it’s fair to say Wrexham supporters think one man was to blame for the defeat.

Goalkeeper Danny Ward should have done better for West Brom’s second goal as he was beaten by Wallace’s sharp strike at his near post.

Ward, 32, arrived on a free transfer in July following the expiration of his contract at Leicester City in June.

But some fans think it’s already time for back-up ‘keeper and last season’s number one, Arthur Okonkwo, to return to the fold.

One fan said: "You have to question why, as a team with ambition, Wrexham looked at Danny Ward and thought, you know what, that’s exactly what we’re looking for. Bloke couldn’t catch a cold."

Another added: “Wrexham deserve everything they get for starting Danny Ward over Okonkwo.”

A third claimed: “Still can’t believe Wrexham dropped Okonkwo for Danny Ward! Wrexham Scouts did watch him at the World Cup?”

While a fourth commented: “Just put the TV on and switched old Sky Sports on just in time for Conor Coady to fail to pick up his man and Danny Ward flap at a shot for West Brom to bag a 3rd. Stupendous.”

A fifth exclaimed: “Unfortunately, the new signings have been terrible for Wrexham; whoever said Kieffer Moore and Danny Ward would be good additions needs to give their head a wobble.”
